Khushboo and Odor
The observation by the Supreme court that a man and woman living together without marriage could not be construed as an offence, will be welcomed by Khusboo, for she faced enough nonsense from her tormentors in Tamil Nadu. The apex court said there was no law which prohibited live-in relationship or pre-marital sex. The observation was made while hearing the special leave petition filed by noted south Indian actor Khusboo, seeking to quash 22 criminal cases filed against her after she allegedly endorsed pre-marital sex in interviews to various magazines in 2005.
Unfortunately, a vital point has been missed by the apex court. Instead of establishing the right to freedom of speech, the court has gone into the morality of her statements. Here the crux of the matter is only freedom of speech and not the morality of the subject. Some mob in Tamil Nadu is trying to gag people of their right to speak. The same mob tried to gag the Tamil cinema industry to refrain from showing smoking scenes, while allowing it to show unfettered violence and rape.
So many criminal cases were filed on Khusboo for speaking her mind on a subject, which is diligently practiced by so many film personalities in letter and spirit. Perhaps the mob in Tamil Nadu is advocating the cinema personalities to follow and not preach. Because so many Tamil movie personalities are the living legends of live-in relationships and the moral police in Tamil Nadu are afraid, youngsters will emulate what is being said by Khusboo and not what is being practiced by many others.
I could arrive at two inferences.
1. Be a source of odor, but don't spread it.
2. Men are allowed to be promiscuous, but women should be chaste.
Or the message is for one and all in Tamil Nadu. Be a devil, but don't be a devil's advocate.
