Meeting The Congressman For The Sri Lanka LTTE Crisis

February 23, 2009
Kalugu

Well finally I have met a US Congressman - I mean a personal meeting with a politician for the first time in my life.

Living in the relatively remote Midwest region of USA with a very small Indian community, the inaction of the Indian government over the human sufferings in Sri Lanka has been a factor of frustration for quite some time now, not just for me but for quite a few family friends here. Watching the human suffering and the brutality of the Sri Lankan forces for several weeks has finally thrust me to swing into action. Consultation with friends lead us to conclude that meeting the district Congressman and presenting the evidences for human rights violations would be the most logical step.

After launching a swift online signature campaign with area residents of Indian origin, we started working with the congressman's office to get an appointment. We were hoping to have a personal meeting at the Congressman's office so that we can show the videos and images that have bothered us much. However the scheduler/Office Manager of the Congressman informed me that the Congressman is busy until a month or so and asked if I would be interested in meeting him at an event in two days. I was aware that the US Senate foreign relations committee is planning to discuss the Sri Lanka crisis in a week and thought the timing would be perfect.

With a decent number of signatures by several area Indians (Not just Tamils, but the entire Indian community signed it displaying a sign of solidarity) and the disturbing videos and images burned to a CD, six of us were all set to meet the Congressman.

We were quite apprehensive about discussing the issue openly since the Tamil rebels are still proscribed in the USA. We all agreed that we will not make any references to the rebels in our discussion but focus on the excesses committed by the Sri Lankan forces.

The meeting was to take place at the Health Care field hearing scheduled at the downtown church. We arrived early and were waiting for the District Director & Staff Agent who was supposed to brief us about the standard procedures of meeting the Congressman and facilitate the meeting.

The Staff Agent arrived and was indeed very helpful and appreciated us for bringing the issue to the Congressman's attention. He also appreciated us for having run the signature campaign. After listening to the information we provided, the Staff Agent collected the file folder with the signed petition and the CD's and informed us that we will be able to meet the Congressman prior or after the event. He also advised us to forward the petition and evidences to other committee members, especially members on the foreign relations committee.

The Congressman arrived and was greeted by few public that were waiting to meet him just like us. The Congressman engaged in a long conversation with a lady who appeared to be in despair due to a loss of a family member. The Congressman was very polite and listened to her long story and hugged her to offer some solace. We knew then that we will have to sit through the meeting and will be able to meet the congressman only at the end of the event. Some of my friends decided to drive home and come back later, while three of us decided to stay.

We found the Health Care field hearing very informative. I was very impressed at the way the hearing was organized.

I started comparing the meeting with that of meetings involving Indians. Be it in India or the USA a meeting involving similar crowd would have been really noisy and full of confusion and chaos. I think we have to accept that confusion and chaos have become part of the Indian culture.

Americans sure have mastered the art of organizing events. Simple process's put in place by the organizers made the event progress in a smooth fashion. The Congressman was very polite and had a fair sense of humor and handled the questions well. A native Indian member who was full of humor asked the Congressman if he needed a job, referring to the acute shortage of doctors and paramedics in his clinic operating in the nearby Indian reservation. The Congressman also did not hesitate to ask for assistance from the folks in the crowd when he was not sure of some statistics.

Finally the meeting got over and we got the opportunity to talk to the Congressman. When I introduced myself and my friends, I mentioned that our roots are in India and we wanted to highlight the crisis in the South Asian nation of Sri Lanka. The congressman immediately said "I have a Tamil Tiger in my office". Looking at our blank reaction, he continued "That was a Joke...". He was making a reference to a Sri Lankan Tamil who works in his office. The Congressman seemed to be very knowledgeable about the happenings in Sri Lanka (obviously).

We informed about the evidences we have compiled and requested the Congressman to take up the issue appropriately and help bring justice to the people. The Congressman said before ending the conversation that he would like to one day visit Sri Lanka and have a vacation there.

That day may be too far away with the approach taken by most involved parties that have a stake in the region.

We all left home with a sense of relief that we have done the right thing. We do not know if the Congressman will be able to stop the terror faced by the people in the war zone, but we are happy based on what is mentioned in Bagavath Geethai - "Do your duty, Do not expect returns".

Eagles have extremely keen eyesight which enables them to spot objects from a very long distance. Kalugu pronounced ka-zhu-gu means eagle in the south asian language of Tamil. Kalugu.com will emulate the bird eagle by providing keen insight into current political, cultural and economic issues of South Asia in an objective manner.

We have had enough of these barbarous LTTE terrorists and only the current government has guts to finish them, that's why we voted 70% to the government in last week local polls. LTTE is preventing Tamil civilians from the war zone and you better bring pressure on LTTE to release their human shield. Remember, more than 50% of Tamils live with Sinhalese peacefully out side those provinces. Even Colombo has 40% Tamil. Aren't you people ashamed of supporting LTTE who has killed 70000 people and your prime minister Rajiv Gandhi? Even yesterday, LTTE attempted a suicide air attack but was unsuccessful! Beware, those who sleep with tigers will be swallowed.

While speaking to the congressman, did you raise your concerns about forced conscription by the LTTE, their child soldiers? How about them shooting fleeing civilians? Or bombing refugee centers? Or how about them firing their artillery from within the no fire zones in the middle of civilians? (All these are reported by independent groups like the UN).

I Applaud your actions for the safety of the civilians affected, and would like nothing better than there to be independent observers. However I would hope that if you were really concerned about the civilians you would also raise the issues above.

Hey Kalugu,

Your Dravidian parties back in Tamil Nadu have also just met directly with the US Consul there, to ask for US intervention. Why do you even call yourself an Indian again? There is only one entity empowered to conduct the foreign policy of India, and that's the central govt in New Delhi, such as it is.

I'm sure you'd never be motivated to meet with anybody over the killing of Kashmiri Pandits, or others within India's borders. It's because you don't regard the rest of Indians as your countrymen. The only thing that you care about is of course the 'race', such as it is.

Well, the reality is that your precious LTTE is going to be wiped out - especially its leader Prabhakaran, if he's not caught. We all know he won't be sacrificing his life for the 'race'.

Meanwhile, you have the nerve to describe yourself as part of the local 'Indian' community where you are? What kind of Indian are you? The accidental kind, apparently.

Kalugu, could you possibly share the name of the Congressman you met or is that confidential?

Which "relatively remote Midwest region of USA" are you talking about or is that confidential as well?

You say that you launched "a swift online signature campaign with area residents of Indian origin" Was there a website which the public could access? If yes, can you please provide us with details? If not, would you mind making public the names and signatures of all those (Indians not just Sri Lankan Tamils) who signed? I assume that those who signed would not mind having their support displayed in public?

Dear Kalugu,

A great initiative. I hope that congressman does something worthwhile with all the information you have provided. There is no doubt, Sri Lankan Tamils need all the help they can get.

All indications are that the end is near for LTTE. And not a moment too soon. But once this war is over, it is important for the international community to get involved in rehabilitating all the displaced civilians and ensuring that the transition back is peaceful. This is why your initiative is so important. It is in the best interest of India and the rest of the world to ensure that peace prevails in Sri Lanka again after all these years.

Regards,

Ravi

All Hindi Morons:

You killed so many innocent TAMILS by sending Rajiv Gandhi's corrupted Hindian's RAW intelligence agency and hindi speaking indian people killing force (ipkf). All these NAZIs raped and killed innocent children, mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers in thousands before chased off from TAMIL LANDS in TAMIL EELAM.

pranab muharjee, man mohan singh, karunanithy family, sonia ghandhi family along with sri lankan counter parts rajapakses, army commander sarath fonseka are NAZIs and must be sentenced to DEATH PENALTY for killing innocent TAMILS. On top on that, hinian indian government is supplying lethal weapons and pocketing millions of dollars.

sri lankan NAZI government is supplying iranian money to indian NAZIs, like sonia gandhi family, pranab muharjee, karunanithy family, pakistanis, chineese, russians and israelis, to get lethal weapons to kill TAMILS.

Hindian government!!!! STOP YOUR PROXY WAR IMEDIATELY......YOU'RE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE GENOCIDE MORONS.....PRANAB MUHARJEE....YOU ARE A TERRORIST along WITH man mohan sigh, sonia ghandhi and karunanithi family.....you all are traitors.....YOU ALL non-TAMILS, YOU CAN'T CONTINUE FOOLING OTHERS....STOP TERRORIZING NEIBORING COUNTRIES AND YOUR TERRORIST ACTIVITIES USING YOUR TERRORIST ORGANIZATIONS SUCH AS RAW AGENCY and GOVERNMENT OF HINDIAN INDIANS...

Ravi - Thank you for your wishes.

Vinod - Please post a comment in my blog (kalugu.com) post here and I will email you more information regarding the petition.

I request Vinod, Sanjay & Citizen to read news & opinions with an open mind. As there are two sides to a coin, there are always more than one opinion to issues around us. However strong an opinion you hold, It should not consume you and lead you to become a fanatic. Fanaticism will only bring bad name to your side of the story/opinion/view point.

Citizen - I understand your frustration, because I know that the ground situation is really bad. However, how is your relentless lamenting going to help others understand the situation?. Please consider.

A great initiative. Well, Indian government is conducting its policy - no doubt - on letting tamil civilians die in Srilanka. So I guess we are left with no choice to ask other countries for the sake of our race. ofcourse, any race has to take care of itself.

All,

Here is the analysis on hindian india, if she does not want to learn from history....

NAZI indians (hindian goverment & her mafia gangsters like rajapakses, sonias, karunanithis)) will be used by CIVILIZED countries very well.

NAZI hindi indians are now well known around the world, where ever they go, as narrow minded lower class humans with hindu fanatism and fumdamentalist behavior in their blood (MEANS TRAITORS - WHO WANT TO LIVE AND LET OTHERS DIE) and no one allows them to lead or make any major decisions and due to their born mentality. Nasty hindian indians must be governed or hindian india must be given back to British for their wrong doings in neiboring countries by bullying the civilians.

hindia is the only country in asia that has long term screwing behavior with neighbors dating back to 1960's. It's the ASIA's worst NAZI style country coming to power all the time by corruption, stealing and by terrorist activities in neiboring countries.

All these are true when Europe is leaning towards European Union.....US, Mexico etc called North America.....others....scandinavian countries......all are working to gether and respecting the ETHNICITIES to the fullest.

BUT NASTY HINDIANS are MAKING the WORLD ORDER NASTY....and SHOWED IT IN NAZI sri lanka and TAMILS LAND - TAMIL NADU by using force....

TAMILS in TAMIL NADU....WAKE UP....DON'T SLEEP BY the ELEPHANT.....BE CAREFUL....HINDIANS AND HINDIA PROVED TO YOU ALL in the CURRENT GENERATION.....YOUR DUTY IS TO RISE UP AND MAKE THE CHANGE WHERE MAHATMA FOUGHT FOR YOU FREEDOM......

NAZIs - gandhi family, pranabs, man mohan singhs, karunanithi family - all these NAZIs are selling your DIGNITY for nothing.

WAKE UP....RISE UP......GOVERN YOUR LAND....DON'T LET HINDIAN INDIANS RUN YOUR LIVES.....SEND ALL THE HINDIANS OUT OF YOUR LAND....WISH YOU ALL THE VERY BEST IN YOUR RIGHT REASONINGS ON HOW TO MAKE YOUR COUNTRY LOVABLE......

VISIT YOUR FORMER PRESIDENT DR. Abdul Kalam's Web site to learn more!!!! He is the LIVING FATHER of INDIA.......Salute Dr. Kalam....

Citizen.

Kalugu, if you are unable to divulge the Congressman's name and the name of your "relatively remote Midwest region of USA" why not say so? Why go through the rigmarole of asking me to post my email address on your blog (is that what you meant by asking me to post a comment on your blog?) so that you can email this information to me? Don't you want DC readers to know who the Congressman is?

Kalugu, other than a sense of satisfaction of having done something towards the cause of Sri Lankan Tamils, your initiative I am afraid would achieve anything better and tangible.

You can venture on a similar signature campaign and despatch it to Tigers in "Puthukudiyiruppu" to lay down arms, so that innocent Tamils would be spared the ordeal.

On an other note, why should we make USA, its president and congressmen as the ombudsman for the world, and cry foul when they carpet bomb Afganistan and indulge in savagery in Iraq.

Sanjay,

I cannot claim myself as an atheist. I am an Hindu and I am also an co-editor at Kalugu. I am also a proud Indian as much as a global citizen. We will be glad to take up the cause of Kashmiri pandits.

Unfortunately I am not well versed in Kashmiri pandit cause as you are. If you can write a balanced article on the cause of Kashmiri pandits. I would love to publish it. I know more abt stuff closer to me than further. Also It is also unfortunate that I have relatives in SriLanka and neighbours from srilanka also..So it is natural that I feel for them more..

Again I reitrate we would love to publish an article on the plight of Kashmiri pandits..And even do what I can about it..

Suresh:

We run a citizen journalism site and incidentally my godchildren are brahmins. If you can write a good article on their plight, I can present it to our editorial team..

I don't know what you mean by their plight. Last year I checked, they got more medical seats and engg seats and wealth, disproportional to their % of population based on last caste statistics done. Once you fight for a more higher share for brahmins, you can also fight for my caste as they don't even get opportunities/wealth proportional to their population. There are a lot of them in huts and slums. And I don't have the time at this time, to showcase their cause in between the deaths.

Their are different Journalistic priorities. Mine is different at the time of human crisis. I will appreciate if you can see the deaths and the suffering at this point. It is ok, if you dont want to..I regret my inability to get into caste and status, at this time.

Suresh Ram, I reiterate what Ronin has said. We will consider articles that highlight the plight of any suffering groups. I highly encourage you to write more on the issue and bring it to the attention of others. Assuming that the world will know your grievance is like expecting justice from others while you yourself are not doing any thing about it.

The US Senate Foreign relations committee had a hearing yesterday on the Sri Lanka crisis. The HRW representative gave the accounts of the horrible humanitarian situation in the Vanni. She quoted several first hand accounts of very horrific and disturbing deaths in the safe zone. Remember 2000 people have met similar fate this year. This is the type of information that are being blacked-out from the media. The Sri Lankan government has effectively created a black hole. We may not want to hear them, because they are very disturbing, but the fact is they are happening as we speak.

While your concerns for sections of our own society may be genuine, it is also important that we condemn the current blatant acts of violence in our neighboring nation.

No doubt Tamilians are into extinction in Srilanka.
Their plight is being capitalized by the Politicians in Tamil Nadu.
Most of Tamils irrespective of caste are in total sympathy with the innocent Tamils of Srilanka who are persecuted by both the Govt and Militant organizations for the past 30 years.
A divide was created by the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi.
Most of the people are of the opinion that it is LTTE who are the cause for the sufferings of Srilankan Tamils at present at least.
Anti Brahmin sentiments helped the Politicians to come to power in 1960s and they are now trying to whip up the same tool. This is going against the interest of Innocent Tamils of Srilanka!
Brahmins as a community is incapable of fighting but as Individuals do sustain most of the affront on them. That is how Brahmins still exist.

Suresh Ram: I don't think Tamils want to just "exist". Brahmin community had its plight, the same way SC's and ST's had for centuries. So lets not forget history.

Recent study by Aananda Vikatan magazine, shows that majority of tamils support Tamil Eelam (more than 70%). Lets not portray the web surfing Tamils as only Tamils. The majority of Tamils in Tamilnadu still dont have access to internet or some dont know how to use it.

An eye for eye?
Hold brahmins responsible for SC ST plight?
Persecute them now?
Will it be right if Tamil Nadu consider the plight of Srilankan Tamils a "THUNBIAL SAMBHAVAM"?

My intentions are not to hijack issue!! It was when someone raised the issue of Kashmiri Pundits I pointed out the plight of Brahmins!

It was the Ltte supporting lawyers who sidelined the issue of Tamil's plight to brahmin hatred!!
Now they are fighting for their personal cause in the name of Tamils!!

Please read below ( Swamy former home minister was attacked anti brahin slogans raised!!)

Chennai: Lawyers sympathetic to the Tamil Tigers on Tuesday hurled rotten eggs at Janata Party leader Subramanian Swamy in the Madras High Court in the presence of the judges and shouted anti-India slogans.

The judges P K Mishra and K Chandru have ordered action against the lawyers. Swamy, who was in the court for a hearing, was whisked away by police.

"The judges took a serious view of the incident," Swamy said later. "I am enjoying this and have asked those who attacked me to convey my thanks to the LTTE for exposing its cowardice once more," he added.

An eye for an eye ? Come on, you can draw parallels of Brahmin-SC/ST issues for centuries with SriLankan-Tamil issues. Anything suppressed for so long will burst. Its the same. Like Kalugu pointed out, what were the issues Brahmins faced in Tamilnadu ? Majority people took their rights from minority, thats all - funny right :)

For once I agree with you Prakash. Know what, the Sinhalese did the same in Sri Lanka:):)

During British rule, Tamils were favoured in Sri Lanka. When the Brits left, the majority SInhalese went overboard in redressing the balance. May be there isn't much difference in the anti-Brahmin pogroms in Tamil Nadu and the Sinhalese treatment of Tamils in Sri Lanka?

Dear Shotgun Murugan, I respectfully disagree. What the Sinhalese did in Sri Lanka post-independence was wrong. What happened to the Brahmin community in TN was also wrong. I have dealt with the caste issue at length (and hopefully on a neutral basis) in my novel Hitchhiker. Please take a look at this: http://www.boloji.com/bookreviews/093.htm

Vinod - Tamils were favoured in British rule ? Are you comparing the "varna-aashram" rule Rajaji wanted to bring it out in India ? May be there is not much difference, but atleast Tamils have the self-respect to fight for their rights, rather than exist :) Its far better to die with self-respect than to exist as no-one in hiding.

Anyways, India (majority including Brahmins) has forgotten the caste system & moving on with reservations and open quotas blah blah....Atleast the Indian system provided a way to Brahmins to "live" with their % of population! Is that the case in SriLanka ?
